âWhy do you keep looking over?â I grunted, barely holding my temper.
âWho said I was looking at you?â Jeff asked.
My lip twitched. Was he playing some sort of game in front of those guys? At first, I thought he was here with the one Iâd seen on TV, but Iâd figured out the other two were a couple, and Woods had been talking to them like he knew them. It didnât add up. Theyâd bailed as soon as Iâd walked up. So what was the deal?
âYou met my eyes,â I said through my teeth.
âI canât look at my roommate?â Woods raised a brow, giving me an attitude I didnât feel like I deserved. âDid you need something? Or did you come all the way over here to question where my eyes stray to?â
âYou looked like you were talking about me.â Rage seethed in my chest. I was minding my own damn business, not even staring at him.
âNo, not really.â
âThen why did they keep looking over?â I slid into the booth, taking the side the guys had vacated.
âWere they?â Jeff was so dismissive.
âYou got a problem?â I was barely keeping it together after the day Iâd had, and the last thing I needed was Jeff giving me attitude when I was asking basic questions.
âNo, why would I?â Woods came off like such a dick. âWhy did you come over?â
âDid I ruin a hook-up for you or something?â I couldnât keep the sneer out of my tone.
He huffed a laugh. âThatâs Harden Hart. His father is running for president. We went to rival high schools, and it used to be a thing between us. He hated me. He has no interest in sleeping with me. He was here with his boyfriend.â
âThat doesnât mean he didnât want to sleep with you.â
Jeff scoffed. âOkay.â
I leaned forward on my elbows. âSo why are you giving me attitude then?â
âIâm not.â It was a lie. I knew that much. Jeff was a good liar, but Iâd learned how to see through him.
âWhyâd you come over here?â he asked again, this time with more venom.
âBecause you kept looking at me.â It was partly true. I was bored with the team and wallowing in my self-pity. Iâd wanted a distraction, and Jeffâs eyes lured me over. Or so Iâd tell myself.
âAm I not allowed to look at you?â Jeff said again.
âDo you want me to go?â I got up to see if heâd stop me.
âNo.â The word came so firm from Jeffâs lips I sat back down.
I exhaled. âThen no more attitude.â
âI donât know what you want from me, Mason. I donât know what this is other thanâ¦â He didnât have to say it. I knew what he meant.
âCanât we be friends?â I asked, not even sure myself. I didnât know how that would work either, but something would be better than this constant back and forth.
âI didnât think you could keep hate fucking me and be friends.â He shot back, attitude embedded in his voice.
âMaybe itâs time to move away from hate fucking.
