SEVENTEEN

Mason Miller

“Why do you keep looking over?” I grunted, barely holding my temper.

“Who said I was looking at you?” Jeff asked.

My lip twitched. Was he playing some sort of game in front of those guys? At first, I thought he was here with the one I’d seen on TV, but I’d figured out the other two were a couple, and Woods had been talking to them like he knew them. It didn’t add up. They’d bailed as soon as I’d walked up. So what was the deal?

“You met my eyes,” I said through my teeth.

“I can’t look at my roommate?” Woods raised a brow, giving me an attitude I didn’t feel like I deserved. “Did you need something? Or did you come all the way over here to question where my eyes stray to?”

“You looked like you were talking about me.” Rage seethed in my chest. I was minding my own damn business, not even staring at him.

“No, not really.”

“Then why did they keep looking over?” I slid into the booth, taking the side the guys had vacated.

“Were they?” Jeff was so dismissive.

“You got a problem?” I was barely keeping it together after the day I’d had, and the last thing I needed was Jeff giving me attitude when I was asking basic questions.

“No, why would I?” Woods came off like such a dick. “Why did you come over?”

“Did I ruin a hook-up for you or something?” I couldn’t keep the sneer out of my tone.

He huffed a laugh. “That’s Harden Hart. His father is running for president. We went to rival high schools, and it used to be a thing between us. He hated me. He has no interest in sleeping with me. He was here with his boyfriend.”

“That doesn’t mean he didn’t want to sleep with you.”

Jeff scoffed. “Okay.”

I leaned forward on my elbows. “So why are you giving me attitude then?”

“I’m not.” It was a lie. I knew that much. Jeff was a good liar, but I’d learned how to see through him.

“Why’d you come over here?” he asked again, this time with more venom.

“Because you kept looking at me.” It was partly true. I was bored with the team and wallowing in my self-pity. I’d wanted a distraction, and Jeff’s eyes lured me over. Or so I’d tell myself.

“Am I not allowed to look at you?” Jeff said again.

“Do you want me to go?” I got up to see if he’d stop me.

“No.” The word came so firm from Jeff’s lips I sat back down.

I exhaled. “Then no more attitude.”

“I don’t know what you want from me, Mason. I don’t know what this is other than…” He didn’t have to say it. I knew what he meant.

“Can’t we be friends?” I asked, not even sure myself. I didn’t know how that would work either, but something would be better than this constant back and forth.

“I didn’t think you could keep hate fucking me and be friends.” He shot back, attitude embedded in his voice.

“Maybe it’s time to move away from hate fucking.
